Although I've observed log walls last much longer against a horde assault. But plank walls will keep out single zombies just as well as log walls and are easier to build. I just settle for plank walls. At low carpentry level, cutting wood and dismantling furniture are good ways to level without wasting nails. Also good to barricade windows as needed. Later you should build cut all the wood you need for walls first then build wall frames.
